Start with what you actually have
The first step is an inventory: data, applications, network and hardware. Data splits into the structured kind, such as databases, and the unstructured kind, meaning files, images and recordings. The first moves easily, the second needs a decision on what is still needed at all.
For applications we settle three things: which are critical to the running of the company, which can move unchanged and which have to be reworked. Only then can anyone say how long the migration will take and what it will cost.

Not everything has to leave the server room
There are three models. Public, meaning work inside Google Cloud. Private, meaning your own cloud environment under your control. And hybrid, where some resources stay on site and some move to the cloud.
Hybrid is the most common choice and it is not a half measure. It lets you move resources in stages, starting with those that risk the least, and keeps the size of any single step under control.

The move itself and a test migration
Virtual machines move with Migrate to Virtual Machines. Data has several routes: transfer over the network, Google transfer services, or a physical appliance when there is so much data that the link would be the bottleneck.
Before the cutover we run a test migration. We check that the applications work on the new environment and that performance holds, before anyone starts working on it.

Cost and performance once you are live
The cloud bills for what you use, so an environment left unwatched can surprise you with an invoice. After the migration we check what genuinely works and what sits switched on for no reason, and we match the resources to the real load.
On top of that come continuous performance monitoring and updates. Google provides its own tools for watching an environment, and we set them so the signal reaches us before a user notices a problem.

Before you ask
Will our data be safe in Google Cloud?
A well configured cloud environment is often safer than a server standing in the office, because backups, access control and encryption are built in. There is one condition: someone has to set it up and keep watching it.
Do we have to move everything at once?
No. Most companies move resources in stages and keep some of them in house. A smaller step means smaller risk, and a hybrid environment works perfectly well.
Can we come back from the cloud to our own servers?
You can, but the longer the environment runs in the cloud and the more has changed in it, the harder and more expensive the return. That is why we agree the scope before the start, not along the way.
